What are Chao?
Well, I don't understand why you'd be here if you didn't know what chao are, but here's a quick go about what they are.
Chao are cute creatures (Chao being the plural of chao) from Sonic Adventure 1 + 2 and Sonic Advance 1 + 2. They are usually cute but the one shown above must of gotten the picture in the middle of nap time, unlike this adorable creature below.
Chao start out from a little white egg with blue spots.
Chao can fly, swim, you name it, but they only live like a day (not all together) just 24 hours (time adds together only to the chao garden your in). They grow out of an egg, then depending on what "Chaos drives" (information on that later) they take, they change. They then "evolve" into that kind of chao, then die. When they evolve, their appearance change depending on what alignment and stat they are. They show evolution by a teardrop shape appearing around them and them coming out with music (unless they are neutral in which no music appears) and they look a whole lot different!
 
If the Chao likes you, (by not throwing it or hurting it) It will come back to life. If you want to know Chao Information, go to the "Stories" section then go to "Crunch: The First known adventure" story. The little chao learns his way through life about chao and what they do.
Chaos drives are what chao use to get more power. They have 5 different stats; Swimming (Yellow Chaos Drive), Flying (Purple Chaos Drive), Running (Green Chaos Drive), Power (Red Chaos Drive) and Stamina (Garden Fruit).
   
Chao also have alignments; Good, Bad and Normal. They have special names in the world of Chao; Hero, Dark and Neutral. As they change, sometimes their actions change and their appearances change. The key to change what they are is, Using a dark or hero character in the game of Sonic Advenutre 1 + 2 (There is no alignment change in Sonic Advance 1 +2 or Sonic Adventure 1). Hero characters are like Sonic, Tails and Knuckles and dark being Shadow, Eggman or Rouge.
Chao love to play race and fight. They win awards from the races they can compete in. There are many races to test Speed, Swimming, Flight and Strength, and sometimes, all four! They race against other chao and win toys like beach balls, radio's and rocking horses. There are 8 medals you win from the races, some of which your chao wear themselves.
Chao fight in the game of Karaté. They win points and make their way up to the top. Chao start of by using small attacks like punts and kicks, but as they grow older, their attacks are like Rolling Punches and Spinning kicks. They also learn how to dodge (while laughing with a develish grin on their face).
Chao start off a light blue colour with yellow tips and a small yellow bobble above their head. The colour changes when they grow (even if its turning dark or changing its stat points) because colour does depend on a lot of things.
Some chao don't always come out light blue though. There are execptions. Egg colours are a different matter. You can get many colours from yellow to silver or maybe ruby. The special eggs that are metallic exist in special places and events. If two Chao that of different colours (like normal egg chao and a white egg chao) have a baby, the baby may just turn out different (see "Mating Recipes" section) depending who has the baby.
Chao also mate (heard above). If you know one is "in season", the chao blooms flowers around it with a love heart where it's bobble is. Chao can only mate if they have evolved once. If your chao isn't in the mood for a baby, you can "force" it to have one by giving it a Heart Fruit. Heart fruits are purchased with rings in the blackmarket. When chao mate, one of the chao walk over to the one that has the flowers and they have a "mating dance" with music that pops up. They spin around and out comes an egg, which there lies a baby chao.
Chao eat fruit from the garden or from the black market. There are many fruit in the garden and much more in the black market. Fruits usually have different effects on the chao. The normal fruit that the chao like to "chow" on are; Square fruit, Circle fruit and Triangle fruit. The alignment change fruit are; Hero fruit and Dark fruit. The Chao fruit boost up the chao's stats while the Mushroom puts their stamina up two points each bite. Each fruit have about 5 bites in them. All of which are bought in the black market.
The Blackmarket is where everything for chao is purchased. There are masks that the chao can wear, there are fruit (listed above), chao eggs (also listed above), and fruit seeds (about to be listed below ;). They are bought with rings and different items come at different times. You can also sell some of the garden fruit (fruit that grows in the garden).
Chao can wear masks. A way to get them is to dig around the hero and dark (rarely, the chao garden) and you can find pumpkins and skulls. Pumpkins, in the hero garden and Skulls in the dark garden. Or you can use eggshells from the hatched chao that just lie around. You can also buy them in the blackmarket. There are Buckets they can put on, Apples, Bags, Tin cans, even Watermelons! Chao can only use them if they have found a Skeleton dog (one of the animals). They are a great accessory which trademarks your chao, that is, until you want it off. You get the mask off buy hurting your chao (that sounds harsh, but it's the only thing that works).

Chao can get appearances from animals (like the skeleton dog listed above) and there are over 20 to get. They are found in the levels of Sonic Adventure 1 + 2. They add ears, arms, legs, tails, frindges, sometimes bobbles, to the chao. They can look cute, but after they evolve, the way the animal parts look, look slightly more cool than cute. The animals include ones like; tigers, penguins, ghosts, pheonixs, dragons, unicorns, skunks, rabbits and much more. They each add to the stat of the chao as well, and have a great look!
 
The last thing on the list is faces. It can have many faces; open eyes, evil grin. closed eyes, cute smile. drowzy eyes, grumpy mouth, there is no way to change it, it happens by random when you get the egg.

Chao are cute and if you treat your chao right, there will be no chao like it. There are alignments it can have. Colour. Animal parts. Medals. Facial expressions. Hats. Stat changes. It would be a unique individual!
